Minority-Serving Institutions
Institutions of higher learning serving underrepresented groups
Minority-serving institutions (MSIs) are accredited institutions of higher learning that are organized around an identification with, a community presence of or service to a minority (underrepresented) group.
University of California's HSI Campuses
Hispanic-serving institutions (HSIs) are one category of MSIs. In order to attain status as a Hispanic-serving institution, the institution must have enrollment of 25 percent or more Latinx/Hispanic students and must also be eligible for Titles III, V or VII grants and/or the nonfederal cost-share waiver.
Five of UC’s nine undergraduate campuses are currently designated Hispanic-serving institutions: UC Irvine, UC Merced, UC Riverside, UC Santa Barbara and UC Santa Cruz. Within a few years, university leadership aims to attain HSI status at every UC campus.
The benefits of being an HSI to a university and its campus communities are numerous. HSI designation signifies to Hispanic/Latinx students a commitment to their academic, career and cultural success. Enrollment of Hispanic/Latinx students has soared at all UC campuses, in particular at the recognized HSIs, and HSI grants made to UC have been significant.
University of California’s AANAPISI Campuses
Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander-serving institutions (AANAPISIs) are another category of MSI. In order to attain federal eligibility status as an AANAPISI, the institution must have enrollment of 10 percent or more Asian-American, Native American and Pacific Islander students and must also be eligible for Titles III, V or VII grants and/or the nonfederal cost-share waiver.
Eight of UC’s nine undergraduate campuses are currently Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander-serving institutions: UC Berkeley, UC Davis, UC Irvine, UC Merced, UC Riverside, UC San Diego, UC Santa Barbara and UC Santa Cruz. The UC campuses recognize that by working together, they can achieve greater outcomes than by operating individually. Inspired by UC Office of the President's Hispanic-Serving Institutions initiative, the UC AANAPISI Initiative was launched under the leadership of UC scholars, administrators and students.
The benefits of being an AANAPISI to a university and its campus communities are numerous. UC campuses and the entire system are crucial in preparing a more diverse student body for the state's economy and workforce. Additionally, they aim to promote diversity among individuals in leadership positions, thus contributing to the economic and social well-being of the state.
