The Office of Diversity and Engagement offers a variety of convenings to link leaders and to deepen the expertise of our partners throughout the state. This year, we invite you to a new 2017–18 Webinar Series for educators, college preparation professionals and the UC community.

The 60-minute webinars will take place beginning October 2017. Each will feature a distinguished speaker or panel of speakers, moderated by Diversity and Engagement staff members. Sessions will address a range of the most urgent issues now facing educators.


An Overview of the Transcript Evaluation Service

Learn more about UC's newly updated Transcript Evaluation Service. TES is one of the university's most advanced and effective tools for keeping California high school students on track for admission to UC and CSU. Presenters will discuss the various ways in which school districts, schools and counselors can leverage the new TES to advance college eligibility for students from all socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds.

Implicit Bias Web Discussion

As part of its ongoing webinar series, Diversity and Engagement is hosting a discussion about implicit bias and some of the various implicit bias trainings available through UC. Whether you have completed one — or several — trainings or webinars, your participation is welcomed. Which of the proposed interventions can you apply in your area of impact? In what areas, if any, do you remain skeptical of the implicit bias training movement? Join UC colleagues for reflection and dialogue about the trainings, and how and whether implicit bias is present in your work.

Registration is limited to 50 participants. Prior to the May 1 event, all registrants are encouraged to complete at least one of the following activities:

  1. Watch a TEDxSanDiego talk from Jerry Kang, UCLA's Vice Chancellor for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion:
  2. Take implicit association tests (IATs) from Project Implicit:

UC Scout: Earning A-G Credits Online

For high school students in need of "a-g" credits, the UC Scout online tool is a free and convenient avenue for earning them. The UC Scout program provides California high school students with free access to the courses they need to be eligible — and competitive — college applicants. UC Scout now offers 65 online classes, including each of those required to fulfill the "a-g" requirements for admission to UC and CSU, as well as 26 Advanced Placement (AP) classes. The University of California created UC Scout to ensure that all California students have access to a high-quality college preparatory curriculum, no matter where they live and attend school.

Basic Needs at UC: Crisis, Intersectionality and Transformation

When students’ most basic needs are not met, it's hard for them to function, let alone learn. The university's latest student-experience surveys show that 44 percent of undergraduates and 25 percent of graduate students across UC campuses are "food insecure." Furthermore, 5–8 percent of all students have experienced homelessness at some point during their time at UC. Join this webinar to learn about basic needs research, a preventative model and strategies to support prospective UC students.

How Will ESSA Affect K–12 Schools and Districts in California?

In a letter to the U.S. Department of Education, Governor Jerry Brown notes that "California will use the Every Student Succeeds Act to create an integrated federal, state and local accountability system." As a result, the educators and professionals working in and with California's K–12 schools are called upon to be ever more well-versed in related policies and accountability structures, so they can best serve stakeholders.

This webinar offers a professional development opportunity for professionals who support K–12 schools and districts in California. It will provide essential information about California’s plan to implement the federal Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), which will align with the state's new accountability system, a new process that uses multiple measures to identify inequities. Participants will receive an overview of federal law as well as specific insights about California’s proposed implementation plan, Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF), Local Control and Accountability Plans (LCAPs), the California School Dashboard and statewide systems of support.

Diversity Data: An analysis of California K–12 and UC demographics

The University of California is committed to a diverse community that reflects the demographics of the state. This webinar will share the current status of that goal, providing an overview of demographics in California and at the university. The webinar will focus specifically on the academic pipeline for two persistently underrepresented groups, engaging participants in a data-supported exploration of how California's African American and Chicano/Latino students move across the public education continuum. By drawing together data from multiple sources, including the California Department of Education, the College Board and the UC Data Warehouse, the webinar will identify subgroups of URM students most likely to benefit from specific forms of intervention, along with projected enrollment gains.

This webinar will also include an overview of the UC Information Center, which provides easily accessible data on a wide range of topics affecting the UC community. The overview will showcase the Info Center's interactive analyses of transfer admissions and affordability.
