Throughout spring 2018, the Office of Diversity and Engagement hosted a webinar series on financial aid, in partnership with uAspire Bay Area and Student Financial Services at UC. The webinars provided UC college access professionals with information and resources to advise students and their families on federal, state and university student aid.

College Affordability Planning

Tuesday, May 8, 2018
10:00 – 11:00 a.m. 

When counselors or advisers are supporting students with financial aid arrangements, not only must they grasp the complex nature of the process, from the CSS PROFILE and IRS DRT to the SAR and Award Letter Review, they must also be prepared to position students for success at the beginning of their senior year. This webinar will introduce best practices for assessing students’ financial situations and identifying their particular needs. Participants will walk away with checklists and tools to guide these important conversations.

Preparing to Cover the Bill

10:00 – 11:00 a.m.

If a student’s estimated bill is significant, what can a family do? What are their options (payment plans, appeals, etc.)? What is financially safe? Often, in the desire to make a college work, students and families will seek advice and guidance. This webinar will provide tools and suggestions to offer them. Participants will leave the webinar with a better understanding of how to help students assess their options, and a basic understanding of both federal and alternative loans.

Financial Aid at the University of California

Tuesday, March 20, 2018
10:00 – 11:00 a.m. 

At the University of California, 58 percent of California students pay no systemwide tuition and fees, and 75 percent of undergraduates are awarded grants and scholarships. This webinar will cover UC’s financial aid policies, including the Blue and Gold Opportunity Plan and the Middle Class Scholarship Program. During this session, participants will also review examples of UC financial aid award letters, to prepare students to understand their own awards. Participants will leave the session prepared to advise students on financial aid at the University of California.

Overview of Financial Aid

For aspiring college students and their families, an understanding of financial aid processes and policies can be indispensable as they approach the application phase. Access to financial aid is often critical to their success in postsecondary education. This webinar will provide an overview of types of financial aid and the steps in the financial aid process, with a focus on California-specific financial aid policies. This session will be particularly geared to staff who are new to advising students on financial aid, and staff who would like an update on recent changes in financial aid policies. Participants will leave the webinar with an understanding of financial aid basics.

Financial Fit at List Creation

Tuesday, June 5, 2018
10:00 – 11:00 a.m.

This training will shed light on the importance of including “financial safety schools” on students’ college lists. Academic and social fit may inform their initial college lists, but financial fit is often the ultimate deciding factor for our students. This training aims to make practitioners aware of all the tools at their disposal, to ensure that students and families are being smart consumers and making wise financial decisions.

About the Speakers

Jamal Collins is the Financial Aid Outreach and Communication Liaison in the Student Financial Support Unit of Student Affairs. Since completing his B.S. in Business Administration at California State University-Hayward, he has spent over 15 years working at many different types of educational institutions as a financial aid administrator.

Yassi Davoodi is the Program Director at uAspire Bay Area, a nonprofit organization that works to ensure that all young people have the financial information and resources necessary to find an affordable path to — and through — a postsecondary education. Yassi manages a program and partnership with the University of California Office of the President that advises President’s Pre-College Scholars about college affordability, via text message. She also supports partnerships at local high schools and supervises Bay Area advisers.
